In a heated exchange, a teacher tells the principal, in front of others, that she is resigning. The principal accepts it with great relief and advises the board.
A week later, the teacher says she did not intend to carry it through and, anyway, she has not tendered her resignation in writing so it is invalid. What can the school do?
Once a resignation is offered, it cannot be withdrawn. The employer, or the principal in this case, is free to refuse to accept it, but if the principal or board accepts it, then the contract of employment has come to an end.
In this case, the resignation is a valid one unless the contract or the school policy specifically required the resignation to be in writing.
