Nayland College

Communicating with the community

Nayland College uses the media to talk to its community.

  • Nayland College Circuit newspaper.

Nayland already has a very strong basis in communicating with the community. We have a 21-year-old newspaper which has been New Zealand's Secondary School Newspaper of the Year four times in a row.

  • Student working on a computer.

We are very proud of Circuit and what it's achieved. And even though we don't even think much about it, it is completely produced using ICT.

  • Valerie Steel coaches a student.

Media Studies teacher Valerie Steel coaches students through the process of newsgathering and desktop publishing.

  • Students doing a radio recording.

We also have a strong relationship with our local radio station. We have two weekly slots which we actually record here at school, and then download the file to the station where they put the backing music behind it ready for broadcasting.

  • Students discussing Circuit.

We also have our own radio station for students. For three weeks each year the students actually broadcast right across Nelson running their own radio station, which again is completely done using ICT.

  • Charles Newton in a studio recording.

There are equivalent opportunities in other schools here locally, and what we need to do is share some of that learning, and share some of the fun and enjoyment.
