Principal profile: Joan Middlemiss
I grew up in Invercargill where an inspirational teacher motivated me to study and later teach French.
My career path to principalship was rather atypical. I was a guidance counsellor, worked in transition education and with gifted students.
In 1993 I became a Senior Manager at Kerikeri High School and was appointed one of two principals in 2003.
As principal, I gain real enjoyment from coaching Community Problem Solving, where students learn in a real-world context, while benefiting their community.
In any remaining spare time I share my family's interests in debating, soccer and enjoying life in the Bay of Islands.
