Forbury School

Principal profile: Janice Tofia

I have been principal of Forbury School for almost five years. I began here at the end of October 2000, when the school was facing a lot of issues.

I have worked in a variety of different educational settings, including special education, and teaching deaf and emotionally disturbed children. I've taught in the town. I've taught in the country. I've taught junior children and senior children, and also had a position of responsibility; and from there went on to work for the Educational Review Office for 11 years.

As a school leader I see my prime task is to support and motivate and encourage staff who are working for me. My role is to make people feel comfortable to take the risk and to have a go at something different. Provided it is positive for children, and the outcomes for their learning are positive, then I am most prepared to support people.

I have a consultative leadership style. I work with people to get the best out of them, and if the ideas come from the ground then I am more than happy to go with that.
