Literacy in the NZC: what looks different?

by Karen Melhuish

Dear all,

Now we have come to the end of the first term, many of you will have attended the first round of workshops introducing the 'big ideas' around developing literacy and numeracy in the NZC (a.k.a. National Standards).

What do you think looks different, if anything, in your schools? For example, how have you used the self-review tools [http://nzcurriculum.tki.org.nz/National-Standards/Self-review-tools] been useful?

Mike, at Waimairi School, describes his school's approach to supporting students who are struggling to achieve in his blog [http://mikeanz.blogspot.com/2010/03/i-am-so-sick-of-hearing-1-in-5-line.html]

I am part of the Learning Media who are supporting schools with literacy across the curriculum. What's happening for you?

Kind regards
Karen

    Greater depth

    Hi there Karen
One of the areas our school has been working on is to provide clarity around what we all actually mean when we say a student is a successful reader or writer. For this reason we have been working away at developing our own progressions so that each student can know exactly where they are up to and most importantly where they are heading next. The NS docs have certainly aided this process by providing us with some useful support. If this is the way we can use them, then it all seems positive.
