Experienced Principals Development Programme

Three hundred experienced primary, secondary, and area school tumuaki and principals are currently taking part in the Experienced Principals Development Programme (EPD) which runs until December 2010.

The programme focuses on developing the capability of experienced principals to lead change that will create the kinds of conditions that lead to effective teaching and learning. Participants work with colleagues to examine the analysis and use of their school’s student achievement data. The programme also focuses on distributed leadership. Resource materials will be generated that can be shared with all principals on the Educational Leaders website.

Projects in the programme are run regionally with input and facilitation provided by the organisations listed below. Projects incorporate a range of activities such as seminars, workshops, professional learning groups, and online interaction.

Key resource materials for the programme include Kiwi Leadership for Principals, the leadership dimensions from the School Leadership and Student Outcomes: Identifying What Works and Why, Best Evidence Synthesis, and Ka Hikitia.

The first step in the programme is for all participating principals and their teaching staff to complete an Educational Leadership Practices (ELP) survey. This gives them and their providers important baseline data on which to base their plan of development for the next 12 months. The indicators have been developed by Viviane Robinson from Auckland University and Cathy Wylie from the New Zealand Centre for Educational Research (NZCER).

The project is being evaluated by Howard Youngs of Unitec. The evaluation will assist in developing further programmes for experienced principals.
